An Update from Avon

Here is an update from AYON.

As a quick response to the earthquake, the Act4Quake team mobilised around 100 volunteers for relief and rescue operations within 23 hours. They reached the unreached and unserved areas. So far the Act4Quake youth team has reached more than 60 villages across 11 districts and mobilised more than 700 volunteers. The team is now looking ahead to the rebuilding and rehabilitation of earthquake affected areas, and is looking for self motivated youth to work on relief, recovery and rebuilding over the short, medium and long term.

Act4Quake was featured in Al Jazeera and the Kathmandu Post, and daily updates were posted at act4quake.org.

A team of volunteers was sent to Dhuksun VDC, Sindhupalchowk with 10 sacks of rice, 2 sacks of daal and basic medicines. A group was sent to Ramche VDC of Sindhupalchowk with similar supplies. A team was sent to Jalbire, Sindhupalchowk with 10 sacks of rice and 2 sacks of daal. A team was sent to Madanpur, Nuwakot with 10 sacks of rice and 2 sacks of daal. Basic medicines were sent to Jeevanpur, Ramkot and Thorjagat in Kathmandu. Salt and basic medicines were given to an orphanage in Kapan, Kathmandu. Ten sacks of rice, one sack of pulses, 12 packets of salt and basic medicines were sent to Suspachmawati in Dolakha. The team also contributed 15 bottles of the water purifier Piyush to Last Resort, Bhotekoshi.

Biker volunteers returned from Tipine (Mahadevkhola), Sindhupalchowk after distributing tents, water purifiers and dry food to 22 households with 82 people. Nearly all the houses in the area were destroyed and the road was blocked, and no aid or support had reached them. There were no total records of deaths or casualties, and the community was drinking river water with poor water, sanitation and hygiene conditions, raising concern of an epidemic outbreak.

A team serving Rasuwa for three days returned after distributing tents, food and water purifiers and assisting medical teams with a health camp. They reported strong support from government officials and security personnel. After tents were distributed to 29 households in ward 9 of Balkumari VDC, Nuwakot district, water, sanitation and hygiene conditions there were assessed as good. A seven member team returned from Dhading Mulpani after distributing tents, bread and rice. The VDC recorded 12 deaths and more than 120 casualties, with poor water, sanitation and hygiene conditions and a highly polluted community. A four member group was sent to Jarsing Pauwa, 10 km from Sankhu, with food and tents.
